My comments will be more along the line of attributes and differences between platforms, not my belief that we couldn't accomplish the same work on another platform. I do perceive value in the differences and attributes.
Stability/availability - The mainframe is the most stable platform we have.
Security - It is the least vulnerable platform. While we continue to spend more time and money implementing new security measures, struggling with patch management, and hardening servers, this isn't required for the mainframe. I do acknowledge that some security measures protect the entire environment.
Support requirements - It takes far less people to maintain and manage the mainframe than our server platforms. Tools are less mature or non-existent. The complexity of the environment creates more opportunity for problems, consumes more time, and is more difficult to troubleshoot.
Consolidation - We are successfully using VMWare in an effort to consolidate Intel servers. However, the mainframe is the only platform that will run a diverse mix of workloads at 100% capacity.
