Banks need the security that only the mainframe can offer and the robustness of the the banking applications that run on the mainframe. Only the mainframe can handle the amount of transactions in a day that a medium sized bank handles.::&Can not really be for sure, all atm transactions, debit card transactions, loans, teller transactions all happen on production CICS regions. On a typical day Production CICS normally handles around a million transactions with a majority of them being some type of customer initiated transaction.::&all most all internal business for the company is handled on PC servers. One Lpar is used strickly for backups and cross platform job scheduling. Payroll simply uses the mainframe to post the company payroll file to be sent to the federal reserve to be distrubited. Their is a accounts payable application that is used strickly for the banking group. ::&?0?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::&Unknown::&The ability to do so much more than just batch processing. I believe mainframes and equipment should not be referred to as legacy systems. That word tends to make people think of the mainframe as old and antiquated when that is not true. It supports almost all of the newer programming languages, is a lot more secure than windows will ever be, hardware more reliable, size - my companys PC servers take up a lot more room then the mainframe and all of its equipment do, no longer is it the mainframe is big but the pc server cluster is big, electricity - all those pc servers need electricity, using that much electricity you will need a bigger UPS and generator when a majority it could be run on one mainframe with a second for redundancy, electricity cheaper, less space consumed, save money on smaller ups and generator.::&wish I could but my company is moving off the mainframe. Everything that is except the bank. Banks and mainframes always a good combination.::&Making the mainframe a reliable and secure product.

<BR>It has been Alltel or Fidelity now, that creates all the banking software the bank uses, that keeps them on the mainframe.
|
|
<BR>There is no other system that can support a bank like the alltel software running on a mainframe.::&I have heard of it. Sounds interesting but what I want to know is what about people like me who have gone through college, who has a family, bills and so on and wants to move into a system programmer job but cant. They didnt have the mainframe charter 9 years ago when I was in school. I cant afford to go back to school now nor do i have time and everyone wants experience, but all the experience I can get is in computer ops.::&FYI - I was going to cut and paste my sentences to spell check them and when I right click i get the message about this webpage being proprietary and so on. I can still cut and paste using windows keys : cntrl-c and cntrl-s

No mainframe, no business.::&None. We do tool development for mainframes and market the tool. All our work is internal.::&ONE very, very small mainframe, actually the smallest xSeries running FLEX-ES with z/OS 1.1, 1.5, z/VM that we could buy. Transactions are ISPF, and submitted batch compiles and test runs. Total users: TWO.::&?0?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::100% Internal.&zSeries and z/OS users *are* our business. The direct and indirect cost of the care and feeding of our zSeries platform(s) are almost all of our expenses. We really do not use any ROI formula any more than a carpenter computes the ROI of his hammer. As I said earlier, we are probably not your typical mainframe shop. But, it is our uniqueness that shows the power of the small zSeries platform and the range and scalability of the zSeries platform.::&Aside from, "Its our business." the winning argument for zSeries has almost always been RAS [Reliability, Availabilty and Serviceability]. Hmmm... My 32 years at IBM is showing through my 12 years as an independent consultant.::&Our original mainframe [a P/390 Server 500] was housed in the basement of one of our founders. He lived in Kansas City, the rest of us live in Cincinnati, Orlando and Chicago. Unfortunately, he was killed in an automobile accident. We did not have hands-on access to the system for almost TEN MONTHS! All we had was remote access via a TSO dial-back arrangement during that time. But, the system just kept running and running and running. The only thing that took it down was a power outage of over 12 hours that outlived the UPS. Then we had to find a way to get into the system to bring it back up.::&Keep it relevant to its customers! And, recognize that tiny ISVs such as we are provide value to its customers in ways that IBM does not, in some ways, cannot... But, I could write a book on this whole question of mainframe relevance. Almost 44 years in the mainframe business provides a different perspective on the world from most of the self-proclaimed gurus.::&Heard of, but never got into all the specifics.::&Somewhat mentioned earlier: The mainframes availabilty and scalabiltiy are as significant as the huge numbers of users of zSeries. We are three people, running two copies of z/OS under z/VM on a system the size of most desktop PCs. This, to me at least, is a significant and unique aspect of the mainframe. In reality, it requires less care and feeding than most Windows PCs. [Of course, I cant speak directly to that since we do not use Windoze, but are dedicated OS/2 users who will probably be forced to Linux one of these years.] Again, if my perspective is of interest, feel free to call.::&?0?1?2::cgehr@edge-information.com<<>>Not Scored by Definition

We have a few new OLTP applications that werent running a year ago, but weve been running OLTP applications in general for years. Same is true for Application Development and Security.&?xxx?xxx?xxx?3?xxx?xxx?6?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::Same as the previous question, we have had an application or two move off the mainframe, but overall were still running many OLTP applications there and doing lots of application development there.&A variety of reasons. Primarily, because we bought a vendor app to replace one written in-house years ago, and the vendor app doesnt run on the mainframe. Additionally, there is a strong anti-mainframe bias amongst developers, who have a lot of say in where they think a new application should reside.::&Unix, Linux, Windows.::&The ability to pump nightly batch through every night, and the ability to server our busiest delivery channels with minimal performance problems.::&We support about 10 million transactions per day for external customers. We have two mainframes supporting this load. This is all financial transactions - checking, savings, debit card, credit card, investment accounts, coming from all channels -web banking, ATM, banking office, etc. We server about 3 million customers.::&On the internal side, we are in the 100,000 transaction per day range. The same two mainframes that support external customers also support internal customers. We are serving 10,000 customers per day, for a large variety of transaction types.::&?xxx?1?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::&We dont have a good formal process to show the value. Those of us the work closely with the mainframe produce regular reports to show the massive number of transactions that are efficiently pumped through it. We publicize those as much as possible.::&Reliability and performance. Its always up, and it always supports the workload.::&We recently instituted a Business Online Banking product. The data resides on the mainframe (in DB2), and is accessed via Java distributed transactions. Certain groups expected the data to reside in Unix/Oracle, just because thats how it is with Java applications. Our argument was the reliability and performance of the database was too critical for it not to run on the mainframe. The product has been wildly successful since its MAY launch, having reached the DECEMBER goal for subscribers by the end of JUNE.::&Thats a tough one. Overall theyve built awareness that mainframes arent dead, which makes it easier for us to convince uneasy application development managers to give it a look. In addition, the capabilities theyve added through the year to allow it to act as a large server on the network have been important. Finally, MQ has done wonders to allow distrbiuted applications to access data via rock-solid CICS transactions has been huge.::&Not familiar.::&Im responsible for Oracle, SQL Server and DB2. All three have their places in the organization, but Im constantly amazed at the preconceptions people have in their minds regarding each. SQL Server is a toy, DB2 is old, slow and inflexible, and Oracle is the wunderkind. The battle for mindshare is as important as having the right technology and capabilities.::&?0?1?2::steve.toeniskoetter@huntington.com<<>>Not Scored by Definition

Primarily consists of consumer loan applications, inquiries, updates, insurance applications, etc. Additionally, we have all the related documents stored on the mainframe in a content mgmt system (Mobius), accessible through a Web interface. We have approximately 1500 branches that are being serviced by the mainframe systems.::&Internally, we have approx. 8000 employees being serviced by the typical applications, ie., payroll, accounting apps. (A/R, A/P, etc.). Approx. 1/2 million (online) transactions daily support this activity. Also, a large portion of the internal usage of resources supports the marketing dept. for their use of an internal data warehouse application running on DB2.::&?0?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::Not currently using an IFL or zAAP processor. The split between internal and external services is probably about 60/40 (internal/external) in terms of resources consumed, with about 80% of resources used for internal services supporting the data warehousing work.&Not sure there is any other than a general recognition by mgmt that we couldnt do what we do (as a company) without the mainframe. The biggest single factor contributing to its perceived value to the company is the successfullness of our DR efforts with the mainframe compared to other platforms the company is using.::&Security, mostly. There just isnt anything else as secure as a mainframe today. When an application absolutely has to have the highest level of security available for its data store, nothing else compares.::&About 4 years ago, the company began storing huge amounts of paper documents (scanning them) to be stored in a secure environment on the mainframe with online access provided to those documents from a browser based app. Company has saved significant dollars by not having to continue to find space to house all the paper documents that the business typically collects for each application for a loan.::&Probably in recent times, it would be the introduction of the zSeries 64-bit architecture, allowing us to continue to expand our DB2 databases for the data warehousing expansion (that application has grown by over 100% in the past two years alone). Additionally, the document imaging application has increased its storage requirements over 2800% in the same time frame.::&Somewhat familiar -- Ive seen it. In my view, yes, they are fulfilling it, at least better from a business perspective than anyone else out there.::&With the increased data-intensive storage requirements that we have been and continue to have to deal with as an organization, the mainframe is the only platform available that can continue to provide the security, manageability, and performance required when dealing with the volumes of transactions and data that we have to deal with as a company.::&?0?1?2::mpenhorwood@agfinance.com<<>>Not Scored by Definition

Value of projecting an image of stability and trustworthiness to our customers because our systems are available to support their needs 24X7 ???::&Approximately 850,000 transactions per day. Sometimes a lot more. Sometimes a little less. We have one mainframe - z800. There are a few applications central to our business - a securities valuation application that calculates pricing information for our funds - a shareholder accounting system - and a few commission calculation and distribution systems.::&Our systems support both internal and external customers. Most of the systems that support employee functions and business expense functions run on smaller non-mainframe servers. We have approximately 2000 employees and about 3 million customers. That doesnt count customers of customers, and I have no idea how to even guess at a number for those.::&?0?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::1 zSeries 800, no IFL (yet), not capable of zAAP. Working on LINUXX LPARs now which may lead to an IFL or two. 100% dedicated to external customer support applications.&I dont. If I were to attempt to quantify it, I would struggle with semantics. What value do you place on trust ??? What value do you place on reliability and stability ???::&I quit calling it a mainframe. I call it a zSeries server. I generally dont argue for or against a particular platform. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. If there is a function that seems like it would fit well on the mainframe, I recommend it. Otherwise, I recommend a more suitable platform.::&Our upgrade to a z800 from a 9672 increased capacity while maintaining stable maintenance costs. A subsequent upgrade to FICON increased throughput which effectively increases capacity. Carving out a new LPAR for a business partner to support their DR needs reduces their costs with their recovery vendor and helps us move towards a cooperative between our companies that will eventually eliminate the need for a recovery vendor for both companies. Were early in evaluating LINUX. Not sure if theres a consolidation opportunity there that would make LINUX cost effective for us on the zSeries server.::&Expanded capability. LINUX, web services, JAVA (yuk). This support is going to allow us huge opportunities to integrate and grow our legacy systems. We just need the right people to realize that.::&Somewhat familiar. My impression of the recent releases of z/OS is Innovative, so they pass. Value is harder to nail down, but I think overall, the zSeries is a good value. But if you want to take advantage of any of the newer capabilities, plan to spend more than its worth. My biggest complaint about IBM is cost. Everything costs a lot of money. You cant even get training for a reasonable cost. Pricing developers away from the platform will doom it in the end. IBMs recent return to universities is a good step, but too little and maybe too late. I want to be able to learn and develop and test on a machine that I can afford at home. I think this falls into the Community segment, but their definition of "community" is different than mine.::&::&?0?1?2::dgkopischke@oppenheimerfunds.com<<>>Not Scored by Definition

The 6 million transactions per day doesnt necessarily mean that we open 6 million loans or process 6 million payments.::&Internally we use a small portion of the resources (<20%) of our two mainframes to service internal users. The boxes I ticked above relate to a new IBM mainframe app that was migrated from a Unisys platform about 6 months ago. It has a web front-end - no WAS, but CICS directly talking to midrange web servers.&?xxx?1?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?6?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::Mostly we dont migrate stuff off mainframes, but occasionally a client will do so. The boxes above relate to a particular client moving a single customer-facing app onto a Unix box.&It was deemed more cost-effective to move this app onto Unix. Im not so sure, but thats what the stated reason was.::&Unix - AIX I think, although it could be Solaris.::&Mainly its I/O throughput.
<BR>
<BR>A second major benefit is the toolset - the others cant compete with the wide array of automation/monitoring/management products.
<BR>
<BR>Relability/Availablity/Serviceability is also a consideration. Weve touted Sysplex for yonks, but had no nibbles. Just recently we may have heard that finally the RAS of Sysplex will be exploited, but Ive heard that before so Im not counting my chickens yet.::&We have several mainframes. one runs a very large Bank, another two run very large federal Govt departments.
<BR>
<BR>In total, I would estimate around 2-3 million individual end-user-driven transactions daily from all our mainframes. Thats probably a low estimate.
<BR>
<BR>The people served are basically the whole of Australia (21 million people) - even the kids use ATMs or internet banking these days.::&We dont really have any mainframes like this. There are a couple of small LPARs on a couple of our mainframes that would qualify, possibly only several thousand TSO transactions for sysprog development.
<BR>
<BR>Sysprogs are about two dozen people here.::&?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?5?xxx?xxx?xxx::We have nine active mainframes in one city, another in another city, and two more in each of three other cities (these three cities are overseas, but we manage their capacity planning).<BR>Two of the 9 mainframes here have IFLs and ICFs (one of each on each box). Another five of the nine here have ICFs. We dont have any zAAPs or zIIPs yet - the latter may come into play when we understand them better.&We measure lots of things. Cost per MIPS, cost per LPAR, cost per CICS region/DB2/IMS/MQSeries subsystem, FTE per MIPS, downtime per year (scheduled and unscheduled).::&Give us all your I/O - we wont drop any.
<BR>
<BR>We are Always On.
<BR>::&Theres not a lot of good news here, sadly. Basically we get some occasional recogition when things dont go badly after theyre expected to not go badly, and if they go badly we always get a kicking.
<BR>
<BR>Thats the price you pay for always being On, I suppose.::&Drop the price. Dont stop dropping them either, IBM, or youll lose out.::&Not Familiar.::&Sorry to be late responding, I dont read z/Journal as often as I should, and only just saw the article from last year (Oct 2005 IIRC).::&?0?xxx?xxx::peter.bishop@eds.com<<>>Not Scored by Definition
