SARA stands for: <BR><BR><BR>S: Scan-Attempt to determine what the actual complaints are by talking with individuals, watching the area. Obtain departmental data, reports, etc. <BR><BR><BR>A: Anaylze-Review the collected data to determine exactly what types of problems have been reported, what actions have been taken to this point. <BR><BR><BR>R: Respond: Develop a plan of action and implement the plan. <BR><BR><BR>A: Assess-conduct relentless follow-up and conduct additional activities if necessary. If the original plan did not work, begin again. <BR><BR><BR> <BR><BR><BR>This is an excellent opportunity to push deceision making down and allow my Sergeant and his squad to handle this project. However, I would ensure the following actions were taken: <BR><BR><BR>(It should be noted that council members and Departmental personnel would be kept comprised of the progress of this project and what actions are being taken) <BR><BR><BR>Data should be collected about the intersection to include # of accidents, types of accidents, contributing factors in each accident, enforcement actions taken, data collected from any past directed patrols, etc. I would ensure officers conduct surveillance of the intersection to determine if any noticeable violations or problems exist. A canvass of the area to include the school and city hall and any surrounding businesses would b conducted to talk with individuals to get feedback about problems. <BR><BR><BR>Additionally, a community meeting may be necessary to discuss the issue and citizen suggestions/feedback would be accepted. The newspaper editorial would be obtained for that perspective. <BR><BR><BR> <BR><BR><BR>Once this information is obtained, it would be closely analyzed to determine what problems exist and what the best reponse would be based on the information gathered. <BR><BR><BR> <BR><BR><BR>Once the squad has analyzed the data and a plan of action has been developed, an aggressive response would be launched. Whatever the timeframe of the reponse, it would be closely monitored and evaluated for necessary changes or revisions as it progresses. <BR><BR><BR> <BR><BR><BR>Once the timeframe of the reponse has expired, the results would be compiled for review and the situation would continue to be monitored to ensure the problem was actually handled instead of simply the symptoms of the problem were eliminated. If it does, you must go back and determine what other steps can be taken to alleviate the problem.::&The Lieutenants role in representing the Department in media relations is to ensure information that can be released to the media is released at appropriate times. The media can be a valuable asset in handling certain types of cases such as missing persons, wanted persons, dangerous situation in the community, etc. It is important to utilize the media as a resource for these types of cases to help with a rapid dissemination of information and capture or safe return of these individuals. The Lieutenant should be cogizant of the possibility that the media may attempt to obtain information that should not be released or cannot be released. When making statements to the media, it is important that the Lieutenant prepare a statement in advance, the public record if you will, and not stray from that public record. There may be times when a question is asked and the the Lieutenant can provide an answer even though that may not have been a part of the original prepared public record. In that case, the Lieutenant should provide a response. If the media asks questions that the Lieutenant is not prepared to answer, he should acknowledge the question or request, but bring the media representative back to the most important point(s), that being his prepared public record.
