There is also a perception that distributed systems is less costly.::&Windows Server::&We have a very large investment in S/370 assembler code that is not easily transfered from the hardware or operating system environment of the mainframe.::&We have two physical mainframes providing services to several thousand locations. These are connected via frame relay circuits and VPN via the Internet. On an average day we process about 6 million transactions on prime shift. As we service several different industries the types of transactions are quite varied. Its also important to note that a "transaction" from the customer point of view (opening a loan, paying off a mortgage, finding a customers account number, etc.) may consist of a single transaction (as we internally count them), but many times requires several interactions with the mainframe. The 6 million transactions per day doesnt necessarily mean that we open 6 million loans or process 6 million payments.::&Internally we use a small portion of the resources (<20%) of our two mainframes to service internal users. The largest workload is software development. We also service our internal accounting needs (Payroll, Accounts Payable, General Ledger, etc.)::&?xxx?1?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::&Presently the majority of our applications require S/370 and VSE. In some respects you can say that we are a "captive audience". (Thats perhaps nicer than saying we are just plain stuck). Hence, we dont spend a lot of time trying to justify ROI for the mainframe. We do carefully track downtime (or uptime as we like to look at it), but this is much more for process management and improvement than for cost purposes.::&Solid track record.
