&The key position responsibilities of a police Lieutenant include the supervision of personnel under his/her command by: <BR>-ensuring adherence to departmental policy and procedures <BR>-ensuring personnel maintain departments standards through continued in-service training <BR>-professional development of personnel under his/her command <BR>-act as captain in the captains absence as necessary <BR>-function as commander in the field during incidents of a serious nature, until relieved by a higher ranking officer. <BR>-respond to the media, as necessary <BR>-review administrative packages <BR> <BR> ::&I would use the S.A.R.A. problem solving model to address this concern. I will outline the problem through the use of the acronym: <BR>S.- Scanning - This part of the model has already been completed through the identification of the accidents at the intersection. <BR>A.- Analysis - I would designate a sergeant to obtain data on accidents that had occurred over a period of time, and to attempt to identify any factors that linked these accidents. <BR>R.- Response - I would then get everyone together who had any vested interest in seeing the situation improved (stakeholders), and we would develop a plan of action. This group would likely include people from the police department, traffic engineering, the school system, business owners in the area and the media. We would use the input of the involved community to develop strategies to address the situation. The strategies would then be implemented. <BR>A.- Appraisal - The results of the the implemented strategies would be reviewed after a period of time, and adjustments would be made based on the success or failure. ::&The lieutenant is oftentimes the ranking officer on incidents that would be of interest to the media. This puts him/her in a delicate position of being required by statute to provide certain information to the media in a timely fashion and also maintaining the integrity of ongoing police investigations. the manner in which a lieutenant conducts himself when dealing with the media can determine how the department is perceived by the public. If a lieutenant is cooperative and pleasant while dealing with the media, it may give the impression of a department that is open and honest. On the other hand, being rude or distant may imply the department has something to hide. ::
