&Financial Services::Senior Systems Programmer&?0?1?xxx?3?xxx?xxx?6?7?8?9?10?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::&&::&::&"Value" is a pretty nebulous term. Value derived from peace-of-mind that it will be running and available 99.999% of the time ??? Value in knowing it wont be successfully assaulted by a virus ??? Value in trusting its security model to the point of allowing most any user to do just about anything they want to without jeapordizing the stability and function of the system ??? Value in building new capability integrated with legacy functions on one platform ??? Value of projecting an image of stability and trustworthiness to our customers because our systems are available to support their needs 24X7 ???::&Approximately 850,000 transactions per day. Sometimes a lot more. Sometimes a little less. We have one mainframe - z800. There are a few applications central to our business - a securities valuation application that calculates pricing information for our funds - a shareholder accounting system - and a few commission calculation and distribution systems.::&Our systems support both internal and external customers. Most of the systems that support employee functions and business expense functions run on smaller non-mainframe servers. We have approximately 2000 employees and about 3 million customers. That doesnt count customers of customers, and I have no idea how to even guess at a number for those.::&?0?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::1 zSeries 800, no IFL (yet), not capable of zAAP. Working on LINUXX LPARs now which may lead to an IFL or two. 100% dedicated to external customer support applications.&I dont. If I were to attempt to quantify it, I would struggle with semantics. What value do you place on trust ??? What value do you place on reliability and stability ???::&I quit calling it a mainframe. I call it a zSeries server. I generally dont argue for or against a particular platform. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. If there is a function that seems like it would fit well on the mainframe, I recommend it. Otherwise, I recommend a more suitable platform.::&Our upgrade to a z800 from a 9672 increased capacity while maintaining stable maintenance costs. A subsequent upgrade to FICON increased throughput which effectively increases capacity. Carving out a new LPAR for a business partner to support their DR needs reduces their costs with their recovery vendor and helps us move towards a cooperative between our companies that will eventually eliminate the need for a recovery vendor for both companies. Were early in evaluating LINUX. Not sure if theres a consolidation opportunity there that would make LINUX cost effective for us on the zSeries server.::&Expanded capability. LINUX, web services, JAVA (yuk). This support is going to allow us huge opportunities to integrate and grow our legacy systems. We just need the right people to realize that.::&Somewhat familiar. My impression of the recent releases of z/OS is Innovative, so they pass. Value is harder to nail down, but I think overall, the zSeries is a good value. But if you want to take advantage of any of the newer capabilities, plan to spend more than its worth. My biggest complaint about IBM is cost. Everything costs a lot of money. You cant even get training for a reasonable cost. Pricing developers away from the platform will doom it in the end. IBMs recent return to universities is a good step, but too little and maybe too late. I want to be able to learn and develop and test on a machine that I can afford at home. I think this falls into the Community segment, but their definition of "community" is different than mine.::&::&?0?1?2::dgkopischke@oppenheimerfunds.com&?0?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::&?xxx?xxx?2?xxx?xxx?xxx::&&&?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?5?6?7?xxx?9?xxx?xxx?xxx::&?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?4?5?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::&&?xxx?xxx?xxx?3?xxx::&?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?14?xxx?xxx?17?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::&?0?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx::&?xxx?xxx?2?xxx?xxx?xxx::&?xxx?xxx?xxx?xxx?4::&1 zseries 800, no
